Country wedding venue visit

Are you getting married in the country? A barn wedding, perhaps?

If you are, let me share a true story.

A bride-to-be from the city toured a farm in the wintertime and loved it. She booked her summer wedding there. When she returned on her wedding day in the summertime, she noticed a smell in the air. "What's that smell?" she asked the wedding manager. "It's from the farm animals," said the manager. The bride was very unhappy with the stench in the air on her wedding day. The manager could not do anything about the smell -- it's part of the farm life.

Moral of the story: Visit any venue before you book your wedding.

Second moral: Ask questions when touring a farm or barn.

While touring, ask:

  1. Are there farm animals grazing or housed near the wedding and reception sites?
  2. If you don't see animals, ask if the animals will be grazing or housed near the wedding and reception sites in the spring or summertime?
  3. Ask about the usual wind pattern in the area. Does the wind carry along the scents from where the animals are located during your wedding month.

For many people, the farm smells are part of the country charm and it won't bother them.
